Is Your Workplace Ready for Sudden Cardiac Arrest?

Every minute that passes without defibrillation results in a 7-10% decrease in survivability for the victim! Your co-worker collapses. How long will it take for someone to react and call for help? A typical 911 call takes 2 minutes to place. How long will it take for the ambulance to respond? A response time for most emergency medical services is over 4 minutes with typical responses in the 6 to 8 minute range. Ten minutes have passed, the chance of survival has been reduced by 100%. Currently only 5% of all cardiac arrest victims will be saved.

We have people trained in CPR, that should help, right?

Yes. But CPR alone is not enough. CPR is only 25% effective in perfusing the body and only 15% of those patients on whom CPR is performed will be discharged from the hospital. The value of CPR is quickly lost if the next link (defibrillation) in the chain of survival does not rapidly follow.

In light of recommendations by OSHA and the AHA, High Safety Consulting has geared up to assist Central Pennsylvania businesses in emergency response planning, training, and equipment. High Safety Consulting Services, Ltd. also offers you a complete package of services and training for workplace response to cardiac arrest.

AEDs are lightweight and very easy to use. They are designed to analyze the heart rhythm and automatically indicate when to administer a shock. Those offered by High Safety Consulting — Survivalink FirstSave AED — are equipped with clear voice directions and computerized patient analysis enabling the device to be used by most anyone, including people without a medical background. The device costs about the same as a laptop computer.

Pennsylvania’s Act 4 of 2001 earmarked grant money for schools to purchase AEDs, paving the way to lower the risk of death by cardiac arrest for school employees and students. Unfortunately, the funding has provided only a limited number of units per school district. For an effective response, many school districts have decided they need additional AED units. High Safety Consulting Services, Ltd. offers these schools an opportunity to trade-in their existing units for a better unit while improving coverage.

Justifying an AED Purchase for Your Workplace

Unfortunately many of the purchasers of AED’s have already had a workplace event that moves them to see the need and value in having these units available. It is human nature to base our assessment of value and risk on our experience. If your workplace has never had a cardiac arrest event, the perception may be that the unit may not be used or needed. Unfortunately, this method of assessment of risk is flawed.

Not unlike a sprinkler system in a building, the device provides extreme value in a critical moment. Consider the key employees in your organization — how many are over the age of 45? How would your company be impacted if they died tomorrow at work? How much time and money would be spent in locating a replacement CFO, COO, CEO? How would productivity be affected by the loss a critical teammate? How will management be perceived by deciding not to invest in a device that costs less than a laptop computer, a device that could have saved an employee’s life?

We can assist you in quantifying the actual risk for your organization and cost-justifying the purchase of an AED unit!
